Hannah injured after fight outside nightclub

COLUMBIA — Missouri men’s basketball player Stefhon Hannah is recovering from surgery for a broken jaw suffered during an altercation outside a Columbia night club early Sunday morning, according to a release from MU athletic media relations.

At 8:45 a.m. Monday, Hannah was listed in "good" condition at University Hospital, which means that his vital signs are stable, his indicators are excellent and that he is conscious and comfortable.

Hannah was named in an incident report made by the Columbia Police Department, Sgt. Brian Richenberger said. Richenberger said that no arrests were made when police arrived at Athena Night Club at 1100 Locust St., and that police are not expecting to make any arrests involving the case soon.

“After speaking with Stefhon and folks from the hospital,”coach Mike Anderson said in the release, “we have the understanding that the surgery was a success and for that, we are grateful. While our primary concern in this case is Stefhon’s well-being, we will go through the process of gathering facts surrounding this incident and we will proceed appropriately.”

The team’s release said Hannah would miss 4-6 weeks because of the injury.

Anderson instituted a “no tolerance” policy in July after a series of incidents involving Missouri players. In an interview earlier this month, guard Matt Lawrence said the players are on “lockdown” and are not allowed to go out.

Anderson created the no tolerance policy after forward DeMarre Carroll was shot in the foot July 5 outside Club Tropicana in Columbia.

Soon after that incident, Anderson dismissed last year’s starting center Kalen Grimes from the team when he was charged with second-degree felony assault in St. Louis.

In September, forward Darryl Butterfield was suspended for the intrasquad Black and Gold game and the team’s first exhibition game against Missouri-St. Louis after he was charged with suspicion of third-degree domestic assault and later pled guilty to peace disturbance.

The incident with Hannah took place hours after the team won 66-62 at Colorado. Hannah scored 13 points in 28 minutes in the game, Missouri’s first road win of the season.

The point guard transferred to Missouri last year from Chipola Community College in Florida and is leading the team in scoring, assists and steals for the second consecutive year.

Earlier this season, Hannah was held out of the Black and Gold exhibition game for violating team rules and was held out of the starting lineup for the team’s first exhibition game.
