PrintCOLUMBIA — A major winter storm could be headed for Missouri later this week, but forecasters Tuesday evening said the heaviest snow will probably fall in southern Missouri.
There were uncertainties regarding the path and snowfall amounts of the storm that is expected to hit Missouri by Thursday night.
In a weather advisory issued Tuesday afternoon, the National Weather Service in St. Louis said it expected the heaviest snow “will be confined along and south of Interstate 44 in Missouri and Interstate 70 in Illinois.”
Melissa Byrd, a Weather Service meteorologist in St. Louis, said that scenario would put Columbia “on the northern fringe” of the winter storm.
Byrd said West Plains and Farmington in south-central Missouri were expected to be hit the hardest late Thursday or early Friday.
Snowfall could total from 8 to 10 inches in some parts of the region, the Weather Service said.
There was still potential for the storm to shift up to 50 miles north or south, according the National Weather Service, allowing Columbia to see more snow than expected.
