Judicial selection opponents organize reform group

JEFFERSON CITY — Opponents of Missouri’s judicial selection process have formed a new group to push for change.

The organization, calling itself “Better Courts for Missouri,” said it wants to make the selection of judges more open and accountable to Missourians.

Supporters of the current judicial selection method said the new group simply would inject more money and politics into the courts.

Currently, a special panel submits three candidates to the governor for openings on appellate courts and urban circuit courts. The governor then appoints one of those three.

Critics contend the composition of the selection panel is tilted toward lawyers.
