Shields passes on governor’s race, aims for top Senate position

JEFFERSON CITY — Senate Majority Leader Charlie Shields said he will not run for governor.

Shields considered a gubernatorial bid after Republican Gov. Matt Blunt announced last week that he will not seek a second term.

But Shields said Wednesday that he will instead seek to become Senate president pro tem.

If Republicans maintain their Senate majority, Shields would be a logical choice to ascend to the top spot. Current Senate President Pro Tem Michael Gibbons is term-limited and running for attorney general.

Shields’ decision comes one day after Rep. Kenny Hulshof said he will run for governor. Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder and Treasurer Sarah Steelman also are in the Republican primary.

Attorney General Jay Nixon is the only Democrat in the race.
