COLUMBIA — The Missouri tennis team is 1-1 after a 6-1 victory over St. Louis University on Wednesday at the Green Tennis Center.

The Tigers’ three freshmen won their singles matches, with freshman Mallory Weber facing the biggest challenge. Weber lost her second set to SLU’s Amanda Hellberg 2-6 at the No. 1 singles court and had to make adjustments to win the last set for a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 victory.

“(Weber) has tremendous weapons, but she went through a period where she didn’t use them, and she played the other girl’s style of play,” Starkey said. “When she was playing her style, it was her match.”

Weber said she was pleased with the outcome, especially because Hellberg is a fifth-year senior.

“For me to go out and be able to win against a girl that’s been doing this for four years is just a great one for me,” Weber said.

Missouri’s only loss came at No. 2 singles from sophomore Kaitlin Dunham, who could not complete her run at a third set comeback.
