COLUMBIA — Two Columbia men were arrested early Sunday morning after witnesses said the men punched a man and stole his gun at a party.

Cory Frye, 21, of 1501 Vandiver Drive, and Gary D. Warren, 22, of 1930 El Chaparral Ave., were arrested on suspicion of first-degree robbery.

Boone County Sheriff’s Department Maj. Tom Reddin said the pair went to a party Friday night, where a 21-year-old Columbia man was showing off his 9 mm Beretta handgun at the 1700 block of Sonora Drive.

“The victim was just showing the gun in a non-threatening manner,” Reddin said.

The victim told investigators he had been at a shooting range earlier that day. He was discussing firearms with someone at the party and got the gun out of his car to show the other person.

Reddin said the victim was assaulted, and the suspects fled with the gun. The suspects then called someone at the party, talked to the victim and asked for money in exchange for the gun, Reddin said.

Frye and Warren were arrested early Sunday morning when the Columbia Police Department responded to an unrelated disturbance about 3 a.m. on Old 63. Reddin said the Sheriff’s Department heard the suspects’ names on the scanner in relation to the disturbance and requested that the police detain them.
