COLUMBIA — The Missouri women’s basketball team had a shot to take down a conference opponent in the final minutes for the second straight time at Mizzou Arena, and for the second straight time came up short.
The Tigers (8-14, 1-8) gave No. 10 Oklahoma (16-4, 6-2) a scare on Wednesday but couldn’t pull off the upset in a 64-57 loss.
The Tigers kept the game close throughout and closed to within one when sophomore forward Jessra Johnson made a runner in the lane with 46 seconds to play despite playing with an injured ankle. MU then forced a turnover on the other end and sophomore point guard Toy Richbow was fouled with 25.3 seconds to play and had a one and one chance.
But Richbow missed the front end and the Sooners came up with the rebound. MU fouled guard Danielle Robinson who also missed her second foul shot, but Courtney Paris pulled down her 17th rebound of the night. She then missed a put-back attempt and tipped it back to Robinson who was fouled. Robinson made both free-throws to put the Tigers down three.
MU had a chance to tie, but Johnson threw the inbounds pass right to Robinson who made an uncontested lay-up to ice the game.
The Sooners were led by juniors Courtney and Ashley Paris who were tough to deal with in the paint. Courtney Paris recorded her 81st consecutive double-double with 25 points and 17 rebounds and Ashley Paris also had a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
The Tigers were out-rebounded 35-14, shot just 28.6 % and were outscored 22-8 in the paint in the first half, but were able to stay in the game by playing tough defense. MU held the Sooners to 32.5 % shooting from the field and trailed by six at halftime.
The Tigers will end the season with seven games against Big 12 North opponents. They will face Iowa State on Saturday at Ames.
