COLUMBIA — Yvonne Anderson knows how to finish.
She finished the second quarter with a drive to the basket to put the Hickman girls basketball team up by five points with 3.7 seconds left before halftime.
She finished the third quarter with two free throws after being fouled with just 2.7 seconds left to give her team a six-point cushion over visiting Parkway South.
Then, with her team trailing for the first time since midway through the first quarter, she scored consecutive baskets with less than two minutes remaining to finish her regular-season career on her home court with a 62-57 victory.
“Crunch time,” she said after the game, “I know when it comes down to it, I’m the one who needs to score.”
Hickman coach Tonya Mirts amusingly called Anderson’s 30-point performance “ho hum” after the game, and Anderson said she was just doing her job.
“Everyone knows their role.” Anderson said. “My role is to take a nice chunk of the scoring load.”
After leading throughout most of the contest, two Kewpie turnovers early in the forth quarter led to Parkway South taking the lead with just over four minutes remaining.
“We were losing momentum fast. Parkway South battled, battled, battled, and came up with a lead late in the game and I thought our kids with their back against the wall responded tremendously,” said Mirts.
Junior Chasity Prince responded particularly well. The team’s best free throw shooter, according to Mirts, sealed the game by making four consecutive free throws. She finished the game with 13 points.
Anderson was honored before the game along with fellow seniors Miriam Tesfamikael and Alexa Fox.
She was given a basketball commemorating her 2,000th career point that she scored earlier in the season, “What more can you say about her, she’s a phenomenal basketball player,” Mirts said.
“She has to do just about everything for us, and does it well night in and night out.”
The seniors will have another chance to play on their home court next week when they begin district play. Hickman is seeded No. 1 in Class 5, District 10 and will play Wednesday at 6 p.m
