The idea
I wanted to try something exotic and fun for Valentine’s Day. So I chose to take a belly dancing class.
The process
When I arrived, I was a bit worried. None of the women looked as clumsy as me.
When we entered the room, the teacher gave each person a “hip belt,” one of those gypsy-looking cloths full of little coins that tinkle as you move.
The coins on my belt kept falling off as I moved, and I was afraid they would ask me to leave if someone slipped because of me.
After some gentle stretching, the teacher told us she would teach us some moves.
She started easily enough — a little hip shaking here, a little shoulder movement there, and I was actually dancing!
It was quite exciting, really — definitely not as hard as it seems. I didn’t even feel like an outcast, like I did in gym class back in high school.
I stayed to watch the advanced class. I didn’t venture to try it, but I really wished I could move like they did. Maybe I’ll get there some day.
The verdict
The class had a nice environment. It combined people from all ages in a class that is fun and not difficult.
For those who love dancing and want to try something different, it is worth a try.
Go ahead and shake it!
