Children's toys to be screened for lead at library

COLUMBIA — Parents across mid-Missouri are encouraged to bring their children’s belongings to a screening for lead from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Columbia Public Library.

Attorney General Jay Nixon is promoting screenings as a measure of precaution after the 2007 recalls of millions of toys that were made in China. Items including toys, plates, cups, eating utensils and pacifiers will be scanned for lead by lab technicians from the St. Louis-based ATC Associates.

It is possible that government agencies and toy companies have not tested millions of toys on the market. But with the screening, parents can find out for themselves if their children’s items are safe, Nixon said in a press release.

Nixon’s office, ATC Associates, the Columbia Public Library and Thermo-Fisher Scienfic are sponsoring the screening.

Serious health concerns are connected to lead exposure.

Information on recalls can be found online at ago.mo.gov.
