COLUMBIA — Five adults and one child escaped a mobile home fire Thursday morning after a smoke alarm woke them up.

The family made it out of the No. 10 trailer at Park Trailer Court, 1812 Business Loop 70 West, at about 1:19 a.m., said Batallion Chief Steven Sapp of the Columbia Fire Department.

Columbia Fire Department investigators determined the fire was caused by a furnace malfunction, Sapp said. The fire box had split open and caught the walls of the trailer on fire.

The Boone County Chapter of the American Red Cross is providing the family, which was not identified, temporary housing, Sapp said.

“The Columbia Fire Department urges everyone to test their smoke alarms to ensure they are in working condition,” Sapp said.
