CHICAGO — Federal immigration officials in Chicago say they've arrested 30 illegal immigrants in Illinois with outstanding deportation orders as part of a multistate operation.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says there were a total of 225 arrests in Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, New York, Wisconsin, Indiana and Missouri. The four-day operation ended Monday.

The individuals arrested had outstanding deportation orders to 12 countries including Mexico, Cuba, Guatemala, India and Poland.

A Homeland Security assistant secretary for immigration says the effort is intended to send a strong message to individuals who disregard the law.

The arrests were part of the Fugitive Operations Program, which was started in 2003.
