PrintCOLUMBIA — The Columbia area is forecast to be on the northern fringe of the next wave of winter precipitation, but snowfall totals of up to 10 inches are expected from Rolla through the western St. Louis metro area.
Late Monday afternoon, National Weather Service forecaster Doug Tilly said Columbia should expect an inch of snowfall accumulation in the next 24 hours and Jefferson City could get 3 to 4 inches. The heaviest snowfall was forecast along and south of the Interstate 44 corridor, and forecasters continued to urge the public to monitor the latest forecasts for updates.
A winter weather advisory is in effect for Columbia and Jefferson City through 6 p.m. Tuesday. Even though snowfall totals for Columbia on Tuesday are forecast to remain relatively light, gusty winds are expected to create widespread blowing snow. Tilly said Columbia should expect 13 mph winds, with gusts up to 20 or 25 mph.
Unseasonably cold temperatures are forecast to settle into the region once the winter storm departs, with highs remaining in the 30s and low 40s into the weekend.
According to Tilly, there is a chance for flurries on Wednesday night, and Friday should be the coldest day of the week, with highs in the low 30s.
The next warm-up is forecast for Sunday, with highs in the 50s.
