Deadline extended for air carrier bids

COLUMBIA — The U.S. Department of Transportation has moved the deadline for submitting proposals for essential air service in Columbia to March 21.

The original deadline was Feb. 29, but a memo released by the U.S. Department of Transportation indicated that Hawaii Island Air has requested a three-week extension to “better assess the market and determine the feasibility of filing a proposal.”

Because there were no local objections to the extension, the request was granted.

The transportation agency is seeking a new essential air service provider for Columbia Regional Airport since Mesa Air Group announced in January that it would discontinue its service in April, provided a new carrier is found. Great Lakes Airlines has told the Missourian it is interested in taking over the service and probably would file a proposal.
