Edwards to appear in new Aflac commercial

Carl Edwards’ signature back flip off the roof his car after a victory has been copied at long last. A new commercial featuring the Columbia native shows the Aflac Duck stealing the move, much to Edwards’ dismay.

The appearance is the first for the Aflac Duck in an Aflac Racing commercial.

“Our duck is an advertising icon and is in pop culture,” said Al Johnson, Aflac’s Vice President of Marketing Services. “We felt that it was a great fit for Carl.”

Johnson said great personalities link the duck and Edwards.

“We love the way they played off each other in the commercial and certainly at the end,” he said.

The 30-second advertisement was filmed in late January at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., where Edwards won on Feb. 25. In the commercial, though, Edwards rides in the passenger seat while the duck drives to victory.

Bob Osborne, Edwards’ crew chief, also appears in the 30-second commercial. Osborne was suspended six races by NASCAR yesterday after Edwards’ car failed inspection following his win at Las Vegas Motor Speedway last Sunday. Osborne was also fined $100,000, and Edwards was docked 100 Sprint Cup championship points.

The commercial will debut tomorrow during a red carpet screening at Atlanta Motor Speedway and will begin showing on TV March 10, according to a press release.

Aflac will be the primary sponsor of Edwards’ No. 99 Sprint Cup car for eight races this season and an associate sponsor for the remaining 28 races.
