PrintCOLUMBIA — Law enforcement around Missouri are searching for a fugitive from Boonville who was convicted of first-degree murder in 1980 and who violated his parole March 4.
Douglas E. Oerly, 46, who had been living in Boonville, failed to report to his parole officer on March 4, said Brian Hauswirth, public information officer with the Missouri Department of Corrections. A warrant for Oerly’s arrest was issued at approximately 3:20 p.m. that day.
Oerly is described as a white male, approximately 6 feet tall and weighing 185 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. According to the CrimeStoppers’ Web site, Oerly may be driving a blue Chrysler Pacific minivan with Missouri license plates 4BP-12X.
The Department of Corrections referred Oerly to the Fugitive Apprehension Unit on Thursday night, Hauswirth said. Local law enforcement from across the state as well as the Missouri State Highway Patrol are following leads and actively searching for Oerly while working with four detectives from the Fugitive Apprehension Unit.
According to Capt. Brad Nelson of the Columbia Police Department, Oerly has family members living in Columbia, and the Police Department is actively searching for him. Capt. Zim Schwartze said Oerly’s family in Columbia is on bad terms with him and that he is not hiding with them.
In 1980, Oerly, then 18, was convicted of first-degree murder for the stabbing death of an elderly woman at the Boonville Kemper Golf Club. He served 15 years of a life sentence before being released on parole in 1995.
Oerly has a history of violating his parole. According to Hauswirth, Oerly was arrested in September 1996 for parole violation and served two months in prison before being released. Oerly was arrested a second time for parole violation on July 10, 2002. He was incarcerated for five years before being released on March 5, 2007. Hauswirth said he could not elaborate on the specifics of Oerly’s previous parole violations. Oerly last reported to his parole officer in Sedalia on Feb. 27.
