Flood warning added to flood watch for Boone County
COLUMBIA — Flash flooding was reported early Monday afternoon in parts of Boone County.
The National Weather Service posted a flood warning for Boone County, southern Audrain County and northwestern Callaway County until 5:45 Monday afternoon.
At 2:31 p.m., law enforcement reported water up to a foot deep flowing over secondary roads between Sturgeon and Centralia in northern Boone County, according to the Weather Service in St. Louis. The Weather Service advised that flash flooding can be expected to affect the Sturgeon and Hallsville areas in particular.
Sanborn Field on the MU campus reported 1.19 inches of rain through 2:50 p.m. Monday.
Boone County also remains under a flood watch through Tuesday evening.
Flood warnings were posted earlier this afternoon for several streams and rivers west of Columbia, with the flooding threat expected to continue across the area through Tuesday.
Rainfall of more than an inch Monday across parts of central and west-central Missouri prompted the National Weather Service to issue flood warnings for watersheds that include the Petite Saline Creek near Boonville and the Moniteau Creek near Fayette.
Remember: Do not drive through flowing water. The Weather Service reminds the public that nearly half of all flood fatalities are vehicle-related and that motorists can lose control of their vehicle in as little as 6 inches of water.
In Columbia, rainfall from Jan. 1 through Sunday totaled 8.06 inches, 5.46 inches more than the average of 2.60 inches.
Those totals will no doubt climb given the 100 percent chance for rain, heavy at times, Monday and Monday night. Occasional showers and thunderstorms are likely on Tuesday, with more heavy rain possible.
The heaviest rains — 3 to 4 inches — were forecast for Monday night through Tuesday, mainly south and east of St. Louis.
