COLUMBIA — The Hickman Kewpies boy’s lacrosse team defeated Rock Bridge in their first meeting of the season on Friday, 11-4.
The game looked as if it was going to be a close one from the start. In the first quarter, Hickman senior Mason Poague netted an early goal to open the scoring. Rock Bridge senior Eric Hall quickly answered with a goal of his own. Poague then scored two more goals.
The scoring continued back and forth in the second quarter with Rock Bridge junior Mitch Durdle, and senior Beau Gambill scoring a goal each. Hickman’s Poague and senior Thomas Eckles also scored in the second quarter and he first half ended with a score of 5-3.
The two-goal margin would remain as each team scored one goal in the third quarter, Gambill scoring again for Rock Bridge and senior Nick Stohlgren for Hickman. However, the fourth quarter was anything but predictable.
Hickman started being more patient on offense and started to take better shots. The Kewpies scored five goals and shut out Rock Bridge for the remainder of the game. Senior Logan Parker and junior Andrew Helmreich had a goal each, and Eckles scored three more, one of those goals was scored after receiving a nice assist from Helmreich while streaking toward the goal.
“It is always fun to win a rivalry game,” said Hickman head coach Jamie Mullen, “I think just being patient in the fourth quarter was key.” Goalie play was exceptional for Hickman senior Dan Hurst with 18 saves.
Rock Bridge coach Jason Callaham said that despite the loss, he is happy with the way his team played.
“We hung with them until the fourth quarter,” Callaham said. “We just need to work on moving off the ball on offense and on our communication on defense.”
