PrintCOLUMBIA — The 484-mile road trip from Waukesha, Wis. to Columbia was worth it for Waukesha West senior Sara Nesbitt.
Nesbitt threw a personal record of 105 feet, 8 inches to place fourth in the high school girls discus competition at the Missouri Relays on Saturday. Her previous personal record was 99 feet, set as a freshman. Moberly sophomore Morgan Whitson won the event with a throw of 113-8.
Waukesha West has made the trip to Columbia for six years, but this was the first time Nesbitt participated.
“She’s been asked by (Waukesha West coach) Chris Ramsey to come every year, but we have a son whose birthday is usually around the same time as the meet, so she’s stayed home because of that,” Chris Nesbitt, Sara Nesbitt’s mother, said. “But this year she said she was coming. It’s been cold, but it’s been a good experience for her. She’s made it into the finals in both shot and discus, so I think she’s happy for that.”
Sara Nesbitt also placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 32-4. Teammate Rachael Thiede, a junior, placed 10th.
Chris Ramsey said his team was accustomed to the 7 1/2-hour trip by now.
“It’s just a good experience to come to an outdoor track meet, because we don’t start outdoor track season for another two weeks,” Ramsey said. “They enjoy it, and the parents enjoy it too, because we normally get warmer weather. We appreciate them hosting a meet like this for both high school and college athletes. I wish a Wisconsin school would do it.”
The Nesbitts started the return trip right after the conclusion of the discus competition.
“Think of me when you’re pulling into Wisconsin, and the mile relay hasn’t started yet,” Ramsey joked.
