COLUMBIA — Two women in their late teens were robbed at gunpoint Saturday evening in the 3000 block of Alpine Drive, the Columbia Police Department said in a news release.

The release said suspect Demarcus Harris, 21, made off with cash from the women and then fled into an apartment in the 3000 block of Alpine Drive. For about 30 minutes, Harris refused to comply with police but eventually surrendered.

Harris is charged with two counts of armed criminal action, two counts of robbery in the first degree, felony probation and parole warrant violation.

Police said Harris’ girlfriend Heather McDonald was arrested on the charge of hindering the prosecution, a felony.

A search warrant was served at the apartment and the handgun used in the robbery was recovered, police said.

Detectives from Columbia Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit are investigating further.
