COLUMBIA — Scott Charton, director of communications for the University of Missouri System, announced his resignation Monday afternoon.
Charton has been with the UM System since 2005 when he was appointed by former UM President Elson Floyd. His last day with the system will be April 30.
Charton, 46, was a journalist for The Associated Press for two decades before taking the position with the university. As spokesmen, Charton said he was paid a salary of $115,600 a year.
Charton plans to form his own company, Charton Communications & Consulting, based in Columbia and Jefferson City.
Since Gary Forsee became UM’s new president earlier this year, Charton said “several great opportunities came my way.”
“And the best way to pursue these opportunities is to devote my full attention to my own company,” he said.
Charton said he will continue to have various associations with the UM System but declined to elaborate.
Charton praised Forsee and the system.
“I think there is a growing culture of transparency in the university, and it’s only a good thing,” he said. “And I’ve tried to encourage this.”
