Harrisburg High School to add extra cameras after sign damaged by shotgun blast

HARRISBURG — Harrisburg High School will add extra security cameras after the school’s sign was vandalized with a shotgun for the second time in three months on Tuesday.

At about 10:45 p.m., high school staff heard a loud shot outside the school. The school’s large LED sign had been shot with a shotgun, according to the Boone County Sheriff’s Department.

“It appeared to be one shot with buckshot spread across the sign,” Harrisburg Principal Lesa Rapert said.

Dick Davis, superintendent of the Harrisburg School District, said there are plans to increase security cameras in the very near future.

“We have an SRO (student resource officer) on campus, and we monitor everything as closely as possible,” Davis said. “Obviously, we are concerned all the time and try to be vigilant, but this was an after-hours vandalism incident.”

Rapert said the other side of the sign was shot in the same way sometime between Feb. 22 and 25.

The Sheriff’s Department believes the incidents are related and is investigating, Boone County Sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Krohn said in a news release. The two incidents caused over $10,000 total in damage.
