Kewpie pitcher Drew Mitrisin pitched 6 2/3 innings of shutout baseball while only giving up two hits.
COLUMBIA — On Saturday afternoon, Kewpie pitcher Drew Mitrisin’s effort on the mound helped the Hickman Kewpies (5-2) shut down the Rockwood Summit Falcons (1-1) 4-0 in the first round of the Capital City Invitational in Jefferson City.
Mitrisin pitched 6 2/3 innings of shutout baseball while only giving up two hits.
“Drew was excellent today,” said Hickman coach Dave Wilson. “He’s really thrown the ball well early in the year and he gives us that good left-hander that every team needs.”
During the offseason, lefty ace Chris Pfau had shoulder surgery, but Mitrisin has been able to keep Hickman on track.
“When Chris went down, we needed a pitcher to step up and Drew has done that,” Wilson said.
Offensively, Hickman struggled for the first three innings before scoring four runs in the final four innings.
Thad McVeigh led the Kewpie offense with two doubles and a RBI.
Closing out the last 1 1/3 innings was Greg Kanuckel, who struck out the side to end the game.
“It wasn’t gas that he was throwing, but it was effective,” Wilson said.
