PrintDespite the long hours, Judy Ganey enjoys being a poll worker. She and her fellow election judges arrived at the Columbia Public Library at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday to begin setup.
“It’s a good civic duty,” she said. “You meet all kinds of people, very nice people.”
A retired teacher who still substitutes, Ganey, 58, noticed a low voter turnout Tuesday.
“It’s due to weather conditions,” she said. “It’s picked up since this morning.”
As of 12:30 p.m., the Columbia Public Library had seen about 140 voters. Most used paper ballots even though the library is one of the Boone County polling places that had an electronic voting machine.
“Paper ballots are preferred four to one,” she said.
Ganey planned on being at the library until about 8 p.m. That’s a 15-and-a-half-hour day. But she had no complaints.
“It’s a good process to go through,” she said.
