PrintCOLUMBIA — Six mid-Missouri organizations will split nearly $400,000 in grants from the Missouri Foundation for Health to help provide improved health care for residents.
The organizations receiving grants are:
• American Red Cross, Audrain-Montgomery Chapter, $29,000
• American Red Cross, Mid-Missouri Chapter, $100,000
• Boonslick Heartland YMCA, $100,000
• Camp Hickory Hill for Diabetic Children, $41,074
• Independent Living Resource Center Inc., $100,000
• Missouri Hepatitis C Alliance, $24,000
Scott Beck, a spokesman for the foundation, said these Basic Support grants are for existing programs.
“As long as the organization is doing good work, we are happy to help,” Beck said. “It has to be used in an existing program, so they can do something else within the organization.”
The Audrain-Montgomery Chapter of the American Red Cross plans to use the grant to help fund its prevention programs, executive director Jackie Heaston said.
“We were in desperate need,” Heaston said. “We were unable to get materials, and now we can fund our workplace trainings and safety programs.”
Ken Luraas, executive director for Camp Hickory Hill, said the money will be used to support the core program, a summer camp for children with Type 1 diabetes.
“As a nonprofit organization, the money will help to compensate for the medical and educational staff, help purchase equipment for diabetes self-management for the campers to use and other medical supplies,” Luraas said.
Boonslick Heartland YMCA CEO Theresa Hendrix said she applied for the grant in hopes of buying a new van for the facility.
“We need to get a new van to be able to transport more kids, seniors and other members to our programs,” she said.
Melinda Hayes, program manager of the Independent Living Resource Center, said the center also applied for the grant to help with transportation needs, including upkeep and maintenance of current vehicles and possibly the purchase of a new van. The program serves Cole, Camden, Miller, Moniteau and Morgan counties and the city of Holts Summit.
The Missouri Hepatitis C Alliance and Mid-Missouri chapter of the American Red Cross could not be reached for comment.
The Missouri Foundation for Health was established in 2000 and has given more than $280 million in grants and awards to date, according to a news release. The foundation provides the most nongovernmental funding to community health activities in Missouri.
