The MU Women’s tennis team was defeated Friday by the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 5-2.

Two of the MU doubles teams won their matches. The No. 2 team of Chrissy Svetlic and Mallory Weber won their match, 8-2. The No.3 doubles team of Jessica Giuggioli and Kaitlyn Ritchie also won their match, 8-3, giving a good start to the Tigers’ day. Because they took two of three doubles matches, Missouri was awarded the doubles point for the team match.

Singles action, however, would only see one victory for Missouri. The win came from MU’s No.6 player, junior Sofia Ayala. Ayala defeated Maria Ring, 6-1, 7-5, her eigth win of the season.

MU’s Mallory Weber had a respectable day as well, taking Nebraska’s Imke Reimers to three matches before being defeated, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

“We need to do a better job of closing out our matches,” said Tiger head coach Blake Starkey in a news release. “We had a lot of opportunities, it was a winnable match, we just need to finish things off.”

The Tigers face the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
