Hickman Review magazine staff rewarded for its effort

COLUMBIA — Four Hickman High School students, rewarded for their long hours and hard work, accepted the Highest Rank award for their work on last year’s student literary magazine, the Hickman Review, at Monday night’s School Board meeting.

Lauren Thomeczek, a junior at Hickman, said working on the magazine left her little time for anything else. “I stopped eating,” she joked.

The magazine, put out once every year, publishes poetry, essays, plays, short stories and artwork submitted by Hickman students and is sold at various venues around Columbia, including the Cherry Street Artisan. It is typically around 75 to 90 pages long.

“It’s a nice showcase of talent from artists involved,” Thomeczek said.

“For the dedicated few, it takes a really long time,” said Maria Carlos, a junior at Hickman who also received the award.

David Wilkerson, a senior at the high school and editor-in-chief of the magazine, said leaving the magazine is bittersweet. “While it may be sad to leave, I’m ready to not have that stress.”

Wilkerson said that this year’s edition will be on sale at the Artisan on May 15. “People get to see a piece of the students they wouldn’t otherwise know.”

At the meeting, the school board also recognized the Rock Bridge High School girls basketball team’s state championship win, the Council for Exceptional Children and two students who received perfect ACT and SAT scores, Abby Sun and Jessy Hwang.
