PrintCOLUMBIA — Traffic signals and streetlights were out and residents and businesses near Providence Road were without power on Monday night, beginning around 9:30 p.m.
The power outage extended from the intersection of Providence Road and Broadway south to Business Loop 70, east to Range Line Street and west to Garth Avenue.
Columbia Fire Battalion Chief Steven Sapp said there were “conflicting reports” about whether or not the outage was caused by a single-vehicle accident near Providence Road and Rogers Street at about 9 p.m.
The driver of the vehicle, a woman, was traveling westbound on Rogers Street between Fifth Street and Providence Road when she swerved to the left and hit a telephone pole, Columbia Police Sgt. Barbara Buck said.
“About that same time, the power went out,” Buck said. “One could speculate that’s what caused the power outage.”
After the vehicle hit the pole, the vehicle flipped onto its passenger side, Buck said.
By the time emergency vehicles responded to the scene, the woman had removed herself from the car.
She was not injured and refused medical attention, Sapp said. The car, which had damage to its front end, was removed from the scene by a local towing company.
The pole was moderately damaged, Sapp said.
As of 11 p.m., Columbia Water and Light was investigating the cause of the power outage and working to restore power to the area. A Water and Light employee declined to comment on the cause of the outage.
