COLUMBIA — Columbia Police are investigating a possible rape at the Mid-Missouri Mental Health Center.

At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, a 21-year-old female patient reported to the nursing staff that a male patient had sexually assaulted her.

The victim was then taken to the emergency room and evaluated, Mid-Missouri Mental Health spokesman Bob Bax said.

As a result of the incident, the male client is now under the surveillance of a staff member at all times to ensure he is not dangerous. The female client is also under surveillance to ensure her emotional needs are met, Bax said.

The Columbia Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit is investigating the incident, but no charges have been filed at this point, Lt. Dianne Bernhard said.
