PrintCOLUMBIA — A 34-year-old man was assaulted while riding his bicycle downtown at about 8 p.m. Tuesday, according to a news release from the Columbia Police Department.
He told police that a man hit him in the head with a handgun and then left in a van, according to the news release.
Before he was hit, the bicyclist was riding east on Walnut Street. The van was traveling south on First Street, crossed Walnut Street and pulled into the Missouri Credit Union driveway at 111 E. Broadway, according to the news release.
While the van was pulling in, still partially in the roadway, the bicyclist stopped quickly to avoid hitting it. He slapped the back window of the van to let the driver know he was there, according to the news release.
The van then followed the victim and cut him off about a block away. The driver got out of the van with a gun, hit the victim in the head and threatened to kill him before leaving the scene, according to the news release.
There were no passengers in the van, Columbia police Capt. Brad Nelson said.
Officers stopped the van at Walnut and Providence, and Nuvan F. Brown, 25, was arrested for second-degree assault and armed criminal action. Police found the handgun inside the van, according to the news release.
Brown was released this morning from the Boone County Jail on a $24,500 bond.
Brown has three previous misdemeanor charges of first-degree trespass from 2005 and 2006, according to Missouri Case.net.
