PrintCOLUMBIA — People driving along South Providence Road might be wondering what’s up with the large trailers, loaded with huge slabs of pre-cast concrete, that are parked on the lot of the former Osco drug store. The slabs are actually components of a new parking garage being built several blocks away near University Hospital. Two MU officials, Phil Shocklee, director of campus facilities, and Jim Joy, director of parking and transportation, answered some questions about the situation.
Exactly where is the parking garage being built?
Shocklee said MU Parking Structure No. 7 is being built at the southeast corner of Hospital and Monk drives.
Why is the pre-cast concrete being stored at the Osco lot?
Shocklee said the general contractor, JE Dunn Construction, is using the lot as a staging area and bringing the pre-cast concrete to the garage site as needed. The company makes the concrete at a Marshall plant, then hauls it to Columbia.
How far along is the parking garage project?
“There’s a portion of the garage already finished,” Shocklee said. “It started in September, and the garage won’t be complete until April 2009.”
How much will the garage cost, and where will the money come from?
“The whole project costs $25 million,” Joy said, adding that his department is using revenue bonds to pay for the garage.
When will the Osco lot be cleared?
Joy said all the pre-cast concrete should be off the lot and in place at the garage by the end of the year.
