COLUMBIA — An Arkansas man was arrested Thursday night at a Columbia hotel after threatening guests with a knife and cutting a man’s wrists and hand, according to a Columbia Police Department news release.

Ashley Kemp Harris, 27, of Fouke, Ark., was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault at Days Inn, 1900 I-70 Drive S.W. According to the news release, Harris got into a physical fight with some guests at the hotel. After the fight, Harris, who was intoxicated, went to his room and got a knife. He returned downstairs and began waving the knife around, stabbing at posts and making threats.

One of Harris’ co-workers, who was in town with him on a construction job, attempted to restrain and disarm him, the release stated. During the struggle, they ended up in a hotel room and broke a window, and the 46-year-old co-worker was cut on his wrists and hand by the knife. Another co-worker, a 44-year-old man, joined in the fight, and the two men were able to control Harris until police officers arrived.

When police arrived, Harris was taken into custody with no incident, Lt. Dianne Bernhard said.

The first victim was treated for wounds at University Hospital and released. The second co-worker was not injured.

Harris is being held at the Boone County Jail. Bail had not been set as of Friday morning.
