Bank customers warned of fraudulent e-mail

Monday, April 28, 2008 | 6:46 p.m. CDT

A new phishing scam has been sent to MU e-mail accounts, according an MU Division of Information Technology e-mail. The sender claims to be from Boone County National Bank, but this is not a legitimate message.

Recipients are urged not to respond to the message, which tells readers to call an 800 number to fix an urgent account issue. This number is not associated with Boone County National Bank and any information given could be used fraudulently.

The MU Division of Information Technology offers the following tips for Internet banking security:

  • Boone County customers that have already called the 800 number and given account information should contact their bank as soon as possible.
  • Never provide banking information without checking to make sure the source is legitimate.
  • To avoid fraud, always use the phone number listed on the back of your credit or debit card.
