MU student newspaper awards first scholarship

COLUMBIA — The Maneater, MU’s student newspaper, awarded its first $500 student journalist scholarship Tuesday.

The annual scholarship program was created last fall using money donated at The Maneater’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2005 and other donations from alumni, according to a release from the newspaper.

A five-person steering committee of The Maneater alumni chose the winner, Justin C. Myers, from student staff members of the newspaper.

Myers, 20, of Nixa, is an MU junior double-majoring in newspaper journalism and electrical engineering. His roles at The Maneater have included senior staff writer, copy editor, assistant production manager and assistant online editor. He will be the paper’s online development editor in the fall, according to the release.

“The Maneater doesn’t restrict what people can do simply based on their titles, and that’s allowed me to become a much more versatile journalist,” Myers wrote in his essay for the scholarship program.

Aside from his work at The Maneater, Myers has worked as a freelance copy editor for LifeWire, an online content provider launched by the New York Times Company, and is an engineering scholar, a Walter Williams Scholar, a Curator’s Scholar at MU and a National Merit Scholarship finalist. He is also active in many societies and organizations at MU, according to the release.

Becky Diehl, the newspaper’s adviser and one of only two non-student staff members, said the scholarship will help student journalists who work long hours for little or no pay.

“This new scholarship program will help foster a new breed of Maneaters who will carry on the long tradition of this great, award-winning newspaper,” Diehl said.
