PrintCOLUMBIA — Police are investigating a report of a robbery early Saturday morning in a downtown Columbia alley.
A 21-year-old woman said she was walking westbound at about 12:15 a.m. in an alley connecting Ninth and Eighth streets when a man approached her from behind, Columbia police Lt. Scott Young said. He grabbed her by the arms and repeatedly asked, “Do you want your life?”
The woman managed to break away after she screamed and kicked him in the legs. She flagged down a group of people who called the police, according to a news release.
The incident occurred in the alley off Eighth Street between Broadway and Cherry Street, according to the release. The woman dropped her cell phone and purse during the attack, Young said. Officers found the phone at the scene, but the suspect reportedly took her purse.
The woman was not injured. She described the suspect as a black male, about 25-30 years old, 6 feet tall with a thin build. He wore a light-colored long sleeve button-down shirt and baggy blue jeans.
Police request that anyone with information submit a tip to the CrimeStoppers Web site at 875tips.com for a reward of up to $1,500 if the information leads to an arrest.
