Hickman tennis tunes up for district

COLUMBIA — Hickman tennis coach Andy Materer was looking for outstanding performances from his top singles and doubles players in the team’s last home match of the season. Materer was pleased with the outcome.

With only six players going to districts, two singles players and two doubles combos, Materer wanted his top guys to establish themselves against Hannibal Tuesday night at Cosmopolitan Park.

“I needed to see their best tennis today, especially from the top guys,” Materer said, “and they dominated.”

The Kewpies begin district play on Saturday and Materer is hoping to finish in the top three. The top four teams advance to sectionals, but if they finish fourth they will likely face rival Rock Bridge, one of the top teams in the state.

In the team’s 7-2 victory over Hannibal, the Kewpies’ top singles player, Brandon Page, won easily 6-2, 6-0. The top doubles team, Sang Chung and Alex Turner won 6-1, 6-3.

“In regular season matches the scores can’t always be the judgment that day.” Chung said. “The key is giving top effort and trying to work on making your game better.”

Materer added that he is hoping the team’s dominance against Hannibal continues going into its last match on Thursday at Sedalia and then into the district finals.

“Our trademark this season has been improvement,” Materer said, “and we get the chance to show it at districts, hopefully with a second- or third-place finish.”
