Rock Bridge tennis team finishes regular season undefeated
The Bruins tennis team secured its 21st victory of the season by defeating Fulton 13-0 on Thursday.
COLUMBIA — The Rock Bridge tennis team’s dual against Fulton on Thursday marked the end of the season for some Bruins players, but a beginning for the rest of the team.
The Bruins defeated the Hornets 13-0 at home, with nine singles wins and four doubles wins, to finish the regular season 21-0. Rock Bridge did not play its best six players, which allowed for some different players to get time on the varsity squad.
Cole Cameron, a senior who will attend MU in the fall, likely played in his last dual as a Bruin. Cameron won 8-3 with freshman Jimmy Hunter at No. 1 doubles and then won 8-1 at No. 3 singles.
“It was good to play with people more competitive,” Cameron said.
Rock Bridge has so much depth that the bottom of its lineup typically dominates and players like Cameron, who has played at No. 3 doubles at times this season, often pick up easy victories. Coach Ben Loeb said unless something unexpected happens, Cameron will not be a part of the lineup for the playoffs.
“It’s bittersweet,” Cameron said of playing his last match. “I probably won’t play tennis a ton more. I just want to enjoy the rest of senior year.”
The Bruins will host Class 2, District 5 tournament on Saturday with the expectation of qualifying for regionals. The players who will be competing in districts practiced against each other on the back courts while the dual took place. Former Bruin Stefan Nosic, who played No. 2 singles last season, came back to practice with his former teammates.
The district meet, which Hickman will also compete in, will begin at 9 a.m. There are five rounds in the tournament.
