COLUMBIA — Elizabeth Allemann, a Harrisburg physician and advocate for the reform of Missouri midwifery laws, has withdrawn from the race for the 19th District seat in the Missouri Senate.
Allemann had challenged incumbent Sen. Chuck Graham, D-Columbia, for the Democratic nomination but said in a news release Tuesday that she could not follow through with the campaign. She cited professional and personal reasons.
“I was excited about the opportunity to bring the voice of the people to the legislature, to bring my advocacy experience with health care to the political realm,” she said in a news release. “We had begun an exciting grass-roots campaign, and it is with gratefulness and sadness that I realized I just couldn’t do it all.”
Allemann has a private practice and is director of the Columbia Community Birth Center. Her brief campaign emphasized a variety of health issues, particularly those involving women and children.
Allemann’s withdrawal means there will be no primary contests for party nominations for the Senate seat. Kurt Schaefer of Columbia and Christopher Dwyer of Hallsville are unopposed for the Republican and Libertarian nominations, respectively.
