SPRINGFIELD — A group supporting embryonic stem cell research confirms it contributed to Republican gubernatorial candidate Sarah Steelman — even though her campaign has denied receiving the money.

Supporters of Health Research and Treatments reporting giving $1,275 to Steelman in December when she was still seeking re-election as treasurer.

Group treasurer Kelley Bryan told the Springfield News-Leader that check was not cashed until February, after Steelman declared her candidacy for governor.

Steelman’s campaign has not reported the check on its financial filings with the Missouri Ethics Commission. A campaign spokesman did not immediately return a call Tuesday.
