Opening of Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park delayed

LESTERVILLE — The opening of Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park in southeast Missouri is being delayed because of severe winter weather and more recent flooding.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources said it had hoped to open to the public on Memorial Day weekend. It said the new goal is June 26, but that will depend on the weather.

Snow and rain hindered progress on construction of a new trail and boardwalk.

The state park outside of Lesterville was damaged by the Taum Sauk reservoir breach in December 2005. Portions of the park have been open for limited use during the last two summers. The Department of Natural Resources said it remains committed to opening again this year.
