COLUMBIA — A Columbia woman is suspected of crashing her car into a light pole early this morning on Hinkson Avenue, shearing the fixture of its base.

At around 1 a.m., Jessica A. Koppi, 21, was driving her 2003 Honda Civic along Hinkson Avenue when she lost control of the vehicle, struck the pole, spun around and rolled the car before coming to rest in a front yard in the 1600 block of Hinkson Avenue, according to a news release from the Columbia Police Department.

Koppi was taken into police custody on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. She and her fellow passenger, Sean M. Quick, 27, were taken to University Hospital for injuries sustained during the accident. Koppi was treated for a gash on her leg, and Quick might have suffered a broken leg, the release said.

Quick was listed in good condition as of 1 p.m. today, according to Barbie Morgan, assistant for public relations at the hospital. Morgan said she had no information about Koppi.

The incident is still under investigation and no charges have been filed.
