Columbia Linens ‘n Things will remain open despite parent company’s bankruptcy

COLUMBIA — After struggling financially, home furnishings retail chain Linens ‘n Things began its inventory clearance in preparation for the closing of 120 U.S. locations. The Columbia store will remain open and unaffected.

“The company, in looking at its financial restructuring, did a store-by-store analysis and found 120 underperforming stores. Those are the ones that are closing,” Rich Tauberman, a company representative, said.

The chain’s parent company, Linens Holding Co., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy May 2.

In 2007, the chain recorded $2.8 billion in sales and had 500 locations in the U.S. and Canada, Tauberman said.

Two companies, SB Capital Group and Tiger Capital Group, will be managing the liquidation process in a joint venture.

All five locations in Kansas City and one in Independence will be closed. These stores began liquidation Saturday.
