ST. CHARLES — A man whose trial had already started pleaded guilty shortly after his brother-in-law allegedly tried to attack him in the courtroom.

Gregory Wadlow of O’Fallon pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree murder for killing his wife, 40-year-old Kelly Wadlow, with prescription painkiller patches.

The trial before Circuit Judge Nancy Schneider was temporarily halted when Wadlow’s brother-in-law allegedly tried to attack the defendant in the courtroom. Police subdued the attacker with a stun gun.

St. Charles County Prosecutor Jack Banas says Lonnie Hlavaty, the brother of the victim, is charged with third-degree assault.

Wadlow’s sentencing is set for Aug. 4.
