One man stabbed after a fight on Garth Avenue

COLUMBIA — A Columbia man was taken into custody in connection with a stabbing Tuesday evening, said Sgt. Dianne Bernhard of the Columbia Police Department.

Daniel Roe, 54, of Columbia was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault and armed criminal action, Bernhard said.

Officers responded Tuesday evening to a report of an assault at Garth Avenue involving a knife. Officers found a 38-year-old man stabbed in the abdomen, Bernhard said. He was taken to the emergency room at University Hospital and admitted for further treatment. Police recovered a silver folding knife that may have been used in the assault, Bernhard said.

According to a news release from the Police Department, Roe and the victim, who knew each other, got into an argument and began to wrestle when Roe pulled out a knife. During the scuffle, the victim was stabbed, Bernhard said. The victim and a witness then went into a nearby house, while Roe fled the scene, running eastbound on Austin Avenue, according to the release.

Officers later took Roe into custody at his residence. Roe requested medical attention after he was booked by police, and he was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

Roe was transferred to Mid-Missouri Mental Health Center for suicide prevention after he made statements about harming himself, Bernhard said.
