PrintJEFFERSON CITY — The Missouri Capitol has a new monument honoring the explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.
The Lewis and Clark Trailhead Monument features bronze figures of Lewis and Clark and several other members of the expedition — interpreter George Drouillard; Clark’s slave, York; and Lewis’ dog, Seaman.

- Hundreds of people gathered Wednesday afternoon at the Capitol in Jefferson City to watch the unveiling of a Lewis and Clark memorial, which features five bronze statues. The memorial sits on the east side of the Capitol grounds and connects the Katy Trail with Jefferson City’s trail system.
When originally approved in 2002, the monument was scheduled to be completed in time for Jefferson City’s 2004 bicentennial celebration of their exploration. But the project ran into funding troubles.
Gov. Matt Blunt helped dedicate the monument Wednesday evening — 204 years to the date after the explorers were believed to have floated on the Missouri River past the point that now is Jefferson City.
