PrintCOLUMBIA — Officials from University of Missouri Health Care broke ground Thursday to kick off the construction of their new Orthopaedic Institute.
The $52.5 million Missouri Orthopaedic Institute, located near Stadium Boulevard and Monk Drive, will be the largest freestanding orthopedic center in central Missouri, a University of Missouri Health Care news release said.
“This new facility was designed and will be built with the needs of orthopaedic patients as its central focus,” Jason Calhoun, chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, said in the release.
“It will include features such as convenient access for patients with wheelchairs and crutches and patient rooms designed for efficient orthopaedic care,” he added. “The first thing that patients will notice when they enter our new facility is that it is very supportive of what they need. Everything is designed specifically for the orthopaedic patient.”
The 113,512-square-foot building will feature 41 clinic rooms, two outpatient procedure rooms, five operating rooms and a pharmacy. It will also include radiology, rehabilitation and prosthetic/orthotic services, the release said.
Jeffrey Hoelscher, University of Missouri Health Care media coordinator, said one of the key perks of the facility will be having so many medical specialists in one place. He said it will foster a more comprehensive health care delivery system.
“If you have a person who has never been to Columbia, and you have to send them to multiple places, it gets kind of confusing,” Hoelscher said. “With a comprehensive delivery system, where aspects of the patients care are located in a central location, it makes health care easier for both the patient and the health care provider.”
The project is expected to be completed in January 2010.
