POPLAR BLUFF — JoDan Russom knows it’s all luck. But the champion of a local rock, paper, scissors championship in southeast Missouri hopes the luck continues as he heads to Las Vegas for the national championships later this month.

The construction worker from Poplar Bluff was among 200 contestants at a qualifying event in Poplar Bluff. He’ll compete against 300 others at the national event June 21-22 with a chance to earn $50,000.

Russom says his typical strategy is to go into a match with one of the three hand signals in mind. After the first throw, he acts off instincts.

The winner of the Las Vegas event gets a chance to compete for an international title during the Summer Olympics in China.
