PrintCOLUMBIA — The green classroom at Grant Elementary School, known as the Eco Schoolhouse, broke ground Tuesday afternoon under cloudless, sunny skies.
Architect Nicholas Peckham, several project volunteers, Grant principal Beverly Borduin, parents and teachers and about 10 to 15 eager elementary school students attended the ground-breaking at the school, at Broadway and South Garth Avenue.
The self-sustaining, environmentally friendly building will replace a trailer classroom damaged in a December fire.
Students were invited to participate in the ground-breaking and armed with shovels. Long after speeches were made, they continued to dig enthusiastically.
Construction is expected to be done in early August, in time for the new school year.
A ground-breaking for the district’s 20th elementary school will be held at 5:30 p.m. today at Waco and Brown Station roads.
