Missouri unemployment rate hits 6 percent in May

JEFFERSON CITY — The state unemployment rate charged upward last month, reaching its highest point in more than three years.

Missouri’s preliminary seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6 percent in May — up from 5.2 percent in April. The overall national unemployment rate in May was 5.5 percent.

Missouri’s unemployment rate also hit 6 percent in January 2005 and July 2004.

Despite the rise in the unemployment rate, U.S. Department of Labor figures show that the overall number of Missouri jobs didn’t change from April to May.

The construction and manufacturing sectors each gained 300 jobs, while government jobs increased by 1,800 in May.

The professional and business services sector lost 2,700 jobs. The trade, transportation and utilities sector lost 300.
