Attorney seeks to postpone MySpace-related trial until October

LOS ANGELES — A Missouri woman charged in connection with an Internet hoax that is suspected of leading a 13-year-old girl to commit suicide may have her Los Angeles trial postponed.

Lori Drew of the St. Louis suburb of O’Fallon wasn’t in federal court Thursday, but her attorney sought to push the trial back from July 29 to Oct. 7, saying he needed time to file motions. The judge is expected to formally postpone the case in a week or so.

Drew has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and accessing computers without authorization.

Drew is suspected of helping create a false-identity MySpace account to convince neighbor Megan Meier she was chatting with a 16-year-old boy. Meier hanged herself at home in 2006, allegedly after receiving cruel messages, including one stating the world would be better off without her.

The charges were filed in Los Angeles because MySpace is owned by a Beverly Hills-based company.
